Massage Therapy

3 types of Massage Therapy are available at Sutherland House; Holistic, Hot Stone and Deep Tissue Massage.

Holistic Massage

Holistic massage is a form of massage therapy that aims to treat the whole person, rather than just physical symptoms of an ailment. Holistic massage focuses on the connection between the mind, body, and spirit along with promoting overall health and well-being.

Unlike other forms of massage therapy that may focus solely on symptoms or specific areas of the body, holistic massage takes a more comprehensive approach to treatment. It focuses on the client’s emotions, sensing and mental health through the use of the body as a mediator. Massage techniques are applied to the whole body for muscle relaxation and to calm emotions. Endorphin hormones are released to provide relief from natural pain and also to promote better blood circulation. This is ideal for addressing body, mind and soul integrity.

Holistic massage may also involve a more in-deep assessment of the client’s overall health and well-being, including their emotional state, lifestyle and any undergoing conditions. This allows massage therapist and client to reach that personal level to tailor the massage to the individual’s specific needs.

All-embracing Holistic massage can be a beneficial therapy for individuals seeking a more comprehensive approach to massage therapy and overall health and wellness. This massage relieves tiredness, eases tension and rebalances your body. It makes you much more refreshed and comfortable in your skin. However, it is important to seek out a qualified therapist who is knowledgeable about principles and techniques of holistic massage.

Hot Stone Massage

Hot Stone Massage will help you relax, release toxins, ease muscle pain and find a balance amid the stresses of your life. The focal point of a hot stone massage is the use of hot stones to apply pressure to promote relaxation during the massage therapy session.

This type of massage involves the use and placement of Basalt river rocks on different points of the body. The rocks are heated before use and the therapist can therefore apply deeper pressure to areas of concern without causing any discomfort. Basalt river rocks are the most commonly used stones during this type of massage as they are smooth from the current and they store the heat well. They are typically made of volcanic rock, which enables them to heat quickly and retain that heat for an extended period.

Before treatment, the rocks are heated in a professional heater.

This type of massage allows you to enter a deeper state of relaxation, the heat within the rocks relaxes the muscles, makes them more pliable. Our hot stone massage combines both traditional massage techniques and the use of hot stones. Your therapist will prepare the hot stones for your treatment and will typically place them strategically down the centre of the back along the spine.

The hot stones can also be placed on the stomach, feet, chest, face and even the toes and palms of your hands if needed.

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage is a style of massage therapy that uses Swedish massage techniques to target the deeper layers of muscle and fascia.

The deeper pressure applied in this massage has shown to be beneficial in reducing chronic muscle tension. It is often used to reduce aches, pains, stiffness and tightness.
It is also great for those who just like firm pressure when receiving a massage.

Deep tissue massage uses slow strokes and sustained pressure to target the inner layer of the muscles. A deep tissue massage will typically focus on your primary areas of discomfort .

Deep tissue massage offers both physical and psychological benefits. Unlike other massage techniques that might focus on relaxation, deep tissue massage helps to treat muscle pain and improves stiffness; but it still can help to unwind mentally as well.
